1. Platz des Umweltpreises 2021 der Stadt Magdeburg in der Kategorie Forschung

29.11.2021 -

The interdisciplinary turbomachinery research group is awarded with the Environmental Award (Umweltpreis) of the City of Mageburg in 2021.

The group, led by Dr.-Ing. Stefan Hoerner, consists of employees from three chairs:

  • The Chair of Fluid Mechanics and Technical Flows of Prof. Dr.-Ing. Dominique Thévenin,
  • the Chair of Electrical Drive Systems of Prof. Dr.-Ing. Roberto Leidhold, both at Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg,
  • and the Chair of Steel and Lightweight Construction of Prof. Dr.-Ing. Christian-Toralf Weber at Magdeburg-Stendal University of Applied Sciences.

The researchers and student assistants are working on sustainability issues in the use of hydropower from river and ocean currents.

The group's projects with European research partners from academia and industry include the systematic optimization of tidal and river turbines with minimal ecological impact, the investigation of bio-inspired methods for passive and active flow control, as well as the research of customized electrical machines and their optimized control in hydropower applications.

Another focus of the group is the development of methods to avoid animal testing in the ecological assessment of run-of-the-river hydropower plants. Here numerical simulations and sensor systems are developed to avoid the deployment of live wild fish.

The chair congratulates Dr. Stefan Hoerner, Dr.Zhao Zhao, Olivier Cleynen, Shokoofeh Abbaszadeh, Dennis Powalla, Emeel Kerikous, Ali Hassan Khan, Karla Ruiz-Hussmann, Wolf Iring Kösters, Islam Hashem, Hannaneh Abbaszadeh, Bilal Badar, Carsten Laddey, Yanneck Kiiski, Rezvan Tahmasebi
