The Eulerian–Eulerian multi-fluid framework can be utilized in the solution of polydispersed multiphase systems as it is computationally less expensive as compared to the Euler-Lagrangian model. In this approach, averaged equations for mass, momentum and energy balance are solved for both the dispersed and continuous phases. In order to describe the evolution of particle size distribution (PSD) as well as account for their effect on hydrodynamics and flow behavior, population balance equations (PBEs) need to be incorporated into this framework as well. However, as PBEs are non-linear integro-differential equations, an analytical solution is not possible except for the simplest of cases. Of the multiple numerical solution possibilities, quadrature-based moment methods (QBMMs) are of particular interest as this approach also makes it possible to represent the PSD in a meaningful way. Various QBMMs with different solution approaches (QMOM/DQMOM/CQMOM/EQMOM etc.) have been proposed, and a stable implementation of these methods in open-source CFD software can be extremely useful in the solution of complex multiphase flows.
